Childhood Depression

Triggering causes of Childhood Depression Include:

-genetic factors (hereditariness)


-alcoholism or drug abuse of the parents

 

-maternal depression (can increase the risk of the onset of disturbs depressed)

-quality of the familiar relationships.

Life Event Causes of Childhood Depression Include:

1.loss of a parent


2.divorce of the parents


3.sexual violence and physical ill-treatments


4.loss of an affective tie


5.study failures


6.loneliness and low self-esteem

As a general rule, with mild to moderate childhood depression, children should be treated first with psychotherapy. This may include family therapy to help the members of the family in understanding depression and what the depressed child is experiencing.

It has been shown that family therapy can speed recovery and help prevent a relapse.


Studies have shown that treatment for childhood depression using cognitive-behavioral family therapy may work the fastest, but the child's psychiatrist will determine which method is best.
